Elsie was born on the 24 March 1925 in Aston, Birmingham. She met her husband, Arthur, known as Den, when they both moved to a new housing estate in Perry Common. They were married on 24 July 1948 and two years later, welcomed their first daughter, Jennifer, into the world and were so excited to embark on their new life as parents.

In 1957, Jenny caught tuberculosis later becoming ill with pneumonia and meningitis. She was treated at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, when the hospital was in Ladywood, but got weaker and weaker. Unfortunately, nothing more could be done. Her parents took her home, so she could be as comfortable as possible, before she sadly passed away on 4 March 1957, at just six years old.

Elsie’s second daughter, Sue, who was born after Jenny had died, said that Elsie always remembered the excellent care Jenny received during her time in our hospital. The staff were incredibly kind to the whole family and they couldn’t have done more for them. Elsie always wanted to thank the hospital and when she died aged 99, she was able to give the greatest gift.

When Elsie wrote her Will, leaving a gift to Birmingham Children’s Hospital was the first thought that came to mind. She saw her Will as a meaningful opportunity to remember a charity that meant a lot to her and her family. Elsie’s gift will help many families like hers, who are cared for at our hospital, for years to come.

Sue said: “I am so proud of the legacy that my mum has left to support thousands of children that visit the hospital. My sister, Jenny, died before I was born so I didn’t get the chance to meet her. My mum’s gift will help the memory of both her and Jenny live on, and is such a special way for them to be remembered. She always wanted to thank the hospital and give back in some way, and leaving a gift in her Will was the perfect way for her to do this.”
